The Realtime Writing Story

Outside of quantum physics and the ending of Lost, few things are as misunderstood as the life of a writer.

When you tell people you're going to write for a living, you often hear things like:

"Enjoy working at Starbucks forever!"

"Are you going to be a teacher?"

"What, are you going to write a novel or something?"

(For the record, there's nothing wrong with any of the above options.)

Making a living as a writer is entirely possible. I'd know, I've done it for more than a decade. That being said, life as a writer in this day and age is far from simple. Why?

Professional writers do a lot more than write.

So, what is Realtime Writing?

Today's "writing" positions entail project management, search engine optimization, interviewing, email and landing page writing, and more.

On top of the never-ending skill requirements, drafts are rarely, if ever, set in stone anymore. What was once "finished" is deemed "in need of a facelift" or "no longer on brand." This results in being ready to reshape pieces on the fly and going to sleep knowing something's never truly "done."

Despite all this, it's also a lot of fun—as long as you're prepared. This is where Realtime Writing comes in.

During my career, I've struggled as an aspiring freelancer, typed until my fingers hurt as an entry-level copywriter, been crushed by ridiculous client expectations, learned countless project management tools, stumbled my way through SEO and strategy, and even managed to win a few international awards.

Now, I'm hoping I can help aspiring and experienced writers alike find success and maybe even have a little fun while doing it.

So, grab your favorite drink, get comfy, and join me for weekly tips and real-life stories on the pitfalls, joys, and challenges of writing in an age where documents are alive and downtime is dead.

About me

I’ve been writing professionally for more than a decade, several years of which have been spent as a full-time remote worker. Before that, I was an English major with a focus in creative writing, and big dreams of being a novelist. (Still waiting on that last part.) And before that, I was a kid in elementary school watching What Women Want, thinking, “I want his job.”

After college I freelanced for various gaming sites, discovered the low pay of gaming sites, and lucked into a real freelance client. After a year of freelancing and working retail, I landed a full-time copywriting gig. The pay was low, the hours long, and the office full of bugs. But, the experience opened the door to a slightly less soul crushing job in corporate marketing!

From there, I found myself moving across the country, tripped and fell into content marketing agency work, and have since focused on helping businesses find their voice and grow their reach through writing.

I currently work with various freelance clients, many of which are in the tech space. My days are typically filled with blog posts, interviews, ebooks, and the occasional landing page.

Most recently my work was recognized by a national marcomm award and an international healthcare content competition, receiving top honors for long-form content, best ebook, and more.

(If you want to take a look at some of my work, feel free to browse my portfolio!)

When I’m not writing, I’m chasing around my son with my wife, tending to our two wild cats, and aiming for that evasive title of “novelist.”

Thanks for joining me on this wild, wordy journey.
